Getting the right product finish

Machinists utilise their skill and expertise to produce the most aesthetically pleasing and accurate components possible.  They take pride in their work as do their clients.  A good surface finish and the general look of parts are very important aspects which require the most ideal machining practices to be used.  So how do machinists get the results they want? The following is by no means extensive but it give a little insight:

Use an insert with a wiper

If you can, make sure your manufacturer uses an insert with a wiper.  These have a flat section like the second image in the diagram above.  This flat part ensures that the surface is wiped smooth as the tool moves across the outside of the part.  You can also avoid a finish that has thread elements to it.

Increase the speed
When using cutting tools a rise in the speed of the tool will make sure that your part is touching the tip of the tool for a smaller time period.  This minimizes the material build-up on the end of the tool which can in turn make the surface finish less than ideal.

Reduce pauses
When a tool stops while it is still touching the surface it can leave a mark on the part.  If you make sure to minimise the number of pauses and hesitations of your tool you can ensure a better surface finish.  You may need to change the entire manufacturing procedure.

CNC Turning - Sydney

At ALNO Product Services it all begins with our high precision CNC Turning capabilities — that’s the foundation fully machined components are built on. Accuracy, of course, is essential. Versatility is what gives ALNO Product Services the edge in terms of CNC turning. The diversification and range of our CNC Turning equipment allow us to produce the parts you need at a competitive price.

Our Team has always had a reputation for versatility, and nowhere is this more apparent than in the diversification of our turning equipment. From conventional lathes to automatics, from chuckers to the most sophisticated computer controlled lathes. ALNO Product Services has the total compliment of machines to meet your every turning need.

Since turning is the foundation upon which components are built, ALNO Product Services takes unusual care to insure accuracy. Our tight-tolerance production turned blanks, produced in-house, actually save money that would otherwise be spent on costly grinding operations. Ultimate benefits are passed along to our customers in added value and more competitive pricing.

Reverse Engineering or Prototyping

Alno Product Services offer a prototype machining service from machining of billet, plate, bar, castings and or assemblies. Working closely with the customer we can assist in design and development process by offer 25 plus years of manufacturing and design experience.

One could say advising on best machining practices, materials and production techniques with the latest tools available today. As a small dynamic company we are also happy to undertake revisions, usually at short notice.

Our team are happy to provide design assistance at all levels from interpreting verbal specifications and concepts through to CAD design and drawing preparation.

Whist we expect customers to have a clear idea of what they require, we are more than happy to offer advice on engineering principals. With regard to wall thickness, proximity of holes, edges distances and preferred use of three primary working axis.

In many instances a customer might have a component that requires excessive machining; we can recommend design modifications to simplify the production engineering requirements whilst maintaining the original mechanical specifications or design intention including both form and function.

In the case of reverse engineering and existing product development, our team have both off the self and developed a range of tools that offer better design outcomes for existing parts. Directly in the case or turned parts, or prepare technical drawings for remanufacture. Our reverse engineering process, of components / assemblies replicates both component function and performance characteristics.

Materials Machined @ Alno Product Services

The machinability of a material refers to the ease with which a metal can be machined to a bench marked surface finish in comparison to materials.

Materials with with a high level of machinability require little power to complete the machining process, in general terms a good finish that is easy to obtain with low levels of tool wear many steel manufactures refer to these materials as free machining. The factors that typically improve a materials maintainability properties often reduce the performance of the material with regard to other desirable properties of a material. To manufacture components economically, machinists are challenged to find ways to improve machinability without compromising the performance of other properties.

The machinability of a material can be broken down into to a number of variables or factors such as the condition of work materials and the physical properties of work materials.

The condition of the work material includes eight factors including the material micro structure, grain size, heat treatment, chemical composition, fabrication, hardness, yield strength, and tensile strength.
